If you have the urge or desire to learn water skiing? It would be advisable to at least have some sort of swimming ability. This can come in very handy should you lose contact with your boat and fall off your skis, although you generally have a life jacket to help keep you afloat until you are picked up again.
There can be other dangers associated with water skiing other than not being able to swim to safety. You would not ideally like to water ski in shark infested waters, unless of course you have some sort of adrenalin buzz.
This danger only applies if you are to be skiing in the seas. If you were to ski in the lakes or rivers, then obviously this would not be a danger.
Films such as Jaws may have led to many people avoiding water skiing as a sport, but sharks are not the only danger to be found in the seas if you are water skiing. Maybe there are rocks close to the surface or part submerged wrecks. These could also be a danger in the waiting.
However most of the time water skiing is performed on stretches of water that are familiar to the skier, so they know the water well. There is only a danger should the skier attempt to ski on stretches of unfamiliar water, and unfortunately these dangers can become all too real.
Whether you are a novice to water skiing or whether you are a seasoned and experienced water skier has no real meaning. It is inevitable that everybody loses their balance at some time, and you could fall into the water regardless.
The human body can only sustain so much and, sometimes with water skiing, if you do fall at such speeds then the speed of your fall into the water could have fatal consequences.
Always adhere to the strict safety measures associated with water skiing, and always make sure that you are accompanied, just in case anything untoward should happen while you are out skiing.
