Golfing for Beginners: Part I

Comments Off

Golfing has become phenomenally popular over the last 45 years, producing such world-class champions as Greg Norman, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods. Some first-class courses too have become household names; think of Wentworth, St. Andrews, Augusta and Pinewood.

Why has golf become so popular these days? Its the opportunity to be outside, to get a good whole body workout, network with friends or business colleagues at a leisurely pace, and to play a game that you can never play perfectly.

Your achievements are tallied on your scorecard for all time and the desire to improve your game can encourage you to play again and again.

This is the first lesson for the novice golfer who doesn’t know anything about golfing.

The typical round of golf is played on a course of eighteen holes, each or which has its own ‘par’. Par is the total number of shots it should take a player to complete that hole, ie all the tee shots (drives), fairway shots, chips (short shots onto the green) and puts into the hole.

This ‘par’ value is based on the length and difficulty of the hole in question. Pars range from three to six, so if you get the ball into the hole in four shots on a ‘par four’ hole, you made ‘par’. However, if you took three shots, it’s called a ‘birdie’ or five shots a ‘bogie’.

All the holes on a golf course will have at least one ‘hazard’ to make the game more challenging and therefore more interesting. These hazards are usually: sand traps, trees and bodies of water, which are set up in such a way as to be obstructive. A beginner at golf should seek out a course which has fewer and less obstructive hazards so it is easier to play.

Players mark their own scorecard with the cumalative total of shots taken for each hole. After playing all the holes, the players add up their own scorecards and the one with the lowest score is the winner.

It is important for beginner golfers to not take themselves too seriously. It takes a long time to get good at this game; even though the professionals make it look so easy.

It makes very good sense to take a few lessons from the course pro, when you are just beginning to learn to play golf, because then you will learn how to stand and swing the golf club correctly.

Are you a rookie to golfing?? We have some greon our website at tips for the beginner golfer on our website at Golfing Tips for Beginners. This article, Golfing for Beginners: Part I has free reprint rights.

What Can You Do To Reduce Your Cholesterol?

Comments Off

There is plenty of evidence that all adults should keep one eye on their cholesterol levels. In early life, the body can handle a bit of abuse, but as we become older our bodies get less able to deal with the rubbish we feed it. Furthermore, younger people are normally more lively than older people and exercise is a means of lowering cholesterol.

It is worth having your cholesterol levels tested at various stages of your life, because some people have genetic problems that result in too much cholesterol and it is worth knowing if you fall into this group as early as possible.

Before you begin working on your cholesterol you ought to know what they are. So, get your figures and ask your doctor for an opinion. He or she might say that they are all right, that they are on the high side or that you had better do something about them right now. Make certain that you make a note of these figures which will be for your HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels.

Once you have these reference points and your GP’s opinion you can make a decision what action to take. In this piece, we will talk about the three most effective methods of reducing your LDL level of cholesterol.

1] The most effectual thing you can do to lower your LDL cholesterol is to reduce the amount of saturated fat and trans fat that you eat. Individuals get most of their bad cholesterol from these two fats by far. Saturated fat comes from animal fat but especially from red meat and full fat dairy foodstuffs like milk, cream and cheese. Trans fats are hydrogenated fats, which are vegetable fats which have been ‘liquidized’ with water.

Merely cutting out these two types of fat might be sufficient to save you from taking medication for the rest of your life. However, every body needs fat, so besides cutting these harmful fats out, you will have to replace some of them with mono-unsaturated fats and poly-unsaturated fats. These names are listed on products in a great deal of countries.

In essence, it means cooking with olive oil and spreading better margarine on your bread. In fact there are even margarines and salad dressings now that actually lower cholesterol in their own right.

2] The second way to keep your cholesterol levels under control is exercise. Exercise burns up your LDL cholesterol. You do not have to do a great deal to create a big difference. Hiking thirty minutes each morning and every evening can have quite a remarkable effect on your health especially if you do not exercise at all at the moment.

3] The third most effective method of keeping your cholesterol levels right is to maintain a decent body weight. As you can see, by following a sensible diet and doing regular exercise, you will of necessity find your correct body weight. The whole system is really telling you that if you have a problem with cholesterol, then you are not living properly.

Techniques For Avoiding High Blood Pressure

Comments Off

If you are worried about your blood pressure getting too high, you will almost certainly go to your GP to seek advice. Your medical doctor will invariably like you to attempt some lifestyle changes or / and take medication if this does not work. Making lifestyle alterations is the first tactic, but it does not always work. It normally does, but just not always.

However, it is vital to try to reduce your blood pressure, also called hypertension, before you go on medication. Lots of individuals are of the opinion that once your body relies on medication to moderate its hypertension, you will never be able to get yourself off the tablets. This is what my GP told me. Therefore, if it goes against your personal beliefs to take tablets, now is the time to do something about it.

The first thing to do is give up smoking and if you regularly drink too much alcohol, to cut back on that too, as both actions will have the impact of elevating your blood pressure. Taking these measures will also have knock-on effects for the rest of your body. You will be fitter in general by not smoking at all and not drinking very much.

The next thing to do is to raise your degree of daily activity. Do you do any exercise at all? If not, you will be surprised at how much two thirty-minute sessions of light exercise will help. Walk for thirty minutes in the morning and evening or substitute one walk for thirty minutes gardening or swimming.

Diet is another manner of beating off the hypertension tablets. Salt, or sodium as it is often referred to, is a major cause of hypertension, usually because it encourages water retention. So, cutting back on salt or following a sodium depleted diet can have a major impact on your blood pressure.

Try substituting something else for salt: more pepper, a mixture of some other herbs or just leave it out altogether. After a couple of weeks you will not notice, except that everyone else’s cooking will taste very heavily over-salted! I did this quite successfully.

Add more fresh fruit and vegetables to your diet, because that will also decrease your hypertension. Eating less fat and red meat will also help. Stress is a main factor in hypertension, endeavor to relax a bit more and possibly take up meditation or yoga.

If you are on medication, it is possible that the drugs are raising your blood pressure. If you think that this may be true, take your drugs to the GP and ask his opinion. You may be able to replace some of them. Some of the drugs that can have an adverse impact are: oral contraceptives, steroids, anti-depressants and cold / flu medicines.

You will notice that lots of these methods for decreasing your (possible) hypertension are related, so if you are an over-weight, inactive smoker who likes a drink, you can do a great deal by remedying that and your pressure will fall and you will become healthier in other ways as well.

Finding A Good Home Blood Pressure Monitor

Comments Off

If you want to check your blood pressure at home, you will need a blood pressure monitor. These monitors are not necessarily very expensive but are within the budget of most households. There are basically two sorts of home monitor: aneroid and digital.

The aneroid monitor has a dial-type gauge and you read off your blood pressure figures from that. It also has a cuff, which you wrap about your arm and which you inflate with a rubber bulb. The digital monitors also use a cuff, yet it can be manually or automatically blown up. The results are read from a small screen. The choice is yours, but most people prefer the automatic digital monitor.

An aneroid home monitor is portable and requires neither batteries nor electricity so is rather cheaper than the digital version. It also has a stethoscope built into the cuff for simple monitoring. A problem could arise in noisy surroundings or if the user is hard of hearing. Someone with arthritic hands or fingers might have an issue squeezing the bulb as well.

Digital monitors are more expensive, yet they are more well-liked as well despite that, because they can be entirely automatic. The screen is also easier to read and some units come with a small printer to create a physical record of your readings. Other digital home monitors have a memory.

The one I use has three memories of thirty spaces each so that you can compare records for a month. Having three memories means that you can monitor and record readings for three separate people or three separate time slots for one person for the period of a month. If you go for three time slots they could be morning, noon and night, as blood pressures vary during the day.

Whichever type of monitor you opt for, make certain that the cuff is the correct size for you. Be particularly cautious if you have very substantial or very thin arms. Check the age range for the device as well. Mine says for use only on people over 18 years, yet does not say why.

If electricity or batteries is ever likely to be a a problem, then the automatic digital home monitor may not be for you, although you may be able to fix it up to photovoltaic cells to exploit the sun’s energy.

Neither of these devices are difficult to use, when you know how, so be certain that the instruction book does not seem as if it was translated by machine. It is of course vital to know how to take accurate readings and how to understand them. In order to check the accuracy of your device it is worth taking it with on your next visit to your GP.

You can check your readings against those of his sphygmomanometer, which is thought of as the gold standard of blood monitoring devices. Your medical doctor will also be able to tell you what your systolic and diastolic pressures ought to be.

5 Reasons For Buying A Spa Day Package

Comments Off

Do you go to a local spa sometimes or are you thinking of spoiling yourself in the near future? A massage or, even and a sauna makes a terrific difference to how you feel that day and the sensation can last several days. You feel livelier, invigorated, up for anything that the world can throw at you. They are decent enough reasons for going to your local spa once or twice a week on their own, |but I will give you five good reasons for purchasing a spa day package.

Firstly, spa day packages are carefully planned series of treatments designed to compliment each other. One package might be for your skin and pores another on precise beauty treatments like eyes, hair, hands and feet, while others might concentrate on cellulose, thighs and buttocks.

In short, if you take a spa day package, you can have a set of treatments to help resolve a difficulty that has been suggested by an expert. Rather than guessing what may be right for your precise condition yourself, a package will lead you down a well-trodden route which might include a traditional massage, massage with hot stones, aromatherapy, a facial, a herbal or mud wrap, hot towels, exfoliation or numerous other treatments.

Secondly, you will be able to opt for a package that suits what you want. For example, if you are on your feet all day, you might like a spa day package that concentrates on sore feet. A full pedicure, in fact, including a foot massage with oils, nail treatment and a long soaking in a foot spa of herbal water.

Thirdly, there is a very good likelihood that the price of the spa day package will be a great deal less than the combined price of all he treatments if you were to buy them separately. In other words, spa day packages ought to be discounted and if you go with a friend or two, maybe you can ask for a further discount for a group booking. Who knows? If you do not ask, you do not get!

Fourthly, a day spa package is like a mini-holiday. Spending several hours in a relaxing atmosphere with specialists pampering you is a wonderful experience. Most individuals just do not want to go away when they are getting to the end of their day spa package.

Fifthly, not just that, but the experience is so good that it becomes addictive. You will want to go back again and either take the same set of treatments or try a different spa day package. Try it and see. A day spa package puts a whole new meaning to the phrase: ‘I am only popping out for a massage’.

A Private Party At A Day Spa

Comments Off

Are you thinking of holding a party? It could be a birthday party or an anniversary for yourself or a friend or it could only be because you want to have a party. Pool parties are great in the summer, but then, not everybody has a pool and it is not always summer, is it? Did you know that many spas will allow you to hold a party on their premises?

That would be fantastic as well, would it not? Having access to the heated pool, the hot spas and Jacuzzis, the steam room or saunas or Turkish bath. I am not certain that I would be interested in working out at the gym at a party though! A stomach full of cake and lemonade would not work well while working on your abs.

If you are keen on holding a party at a local spa, the first thing to do is find a local spa that allows the holding of private parties. This is simple enough. Most spas will have a web site which has all the facilities listed on it. So either do a search on the Internet for ‘spas in xxxxx’, where xxxxx is the name of your town or look under spas in Yellow Pages and then use the names to look for the web sites.

There are a couple of items that you have to check next, but first make a list of what facilities you want to enjoy at your party. Do you want it to be private or open to all? Do you want to let children in? Does everyone have to dress the part or can individuals (older individuals maybe) wear street clothes? Is alcohol available and can you take drinks into the jacuzzi?

Once you have your list of needs and suitable dates, you are in a position to look for fitting locations. Once you find the nearest fit to your requirements, phone them up and see if they will permit all your needs. It may not be a problem for them.

How many people are going to be at your spa party and who is going to pay? Well, it depends on the party actually. Say a bride-to-be wants to go to the spa with her bride’s maids before the wedding; the bride should pay.

What if five friends start a night on the town at the spa? Everyone pays their own way.You can negotiate a discount at a lot of spas if more than five or six individuals attend as a group, yet that discount might not be big.

A spa party is a fantastic day out whatever the reason for the party, and they are very flexible. You could hire the whole spa for two or three hours for mum’s fiftieth and meet up in the bar afterwards or you could use the spa party as a precursor to going on somewhere else. One thing is for sure, you will feel at your best and up for anything when you walk out of the spa party.

Common Health Spa Salon Day Packages

Comments Off

Have you ever been to a health spa resort? If you have not, then you ought to consider it. If you have never been pampered for a day or even a couple of hours, you do not know what you are missing. However, what many individuals, even those who do go to a health spa regularly, do not realize is that it is occasionally better to take one of the popular health spa salon day packages than to take isolated treatments.

One of the advantages of taking a spa salon day package is price, and another is compatibility. Individual treatments such as a facial can seem costly when it is likened to a home application done by yourself, but a package might include a facial, a haircut and a make over for not much more.

Spa salon day packages be likely to concentrate on one particular region, and they take that area by storm. The area involved could be your face, your feet, your thighs or your tummy or perhaps just your skin in general. Whichever region you choose to have a go at, you will come out of the health spa after a spa salon day package feeling a great deal better than when you went in.

Here are some examples of spa salon day packages that you may find at your local spa.

A ‘Girls’ Day Out’ package is normally a ‘pamper package and is intended for a group of girlfriends to go together. This sort of spa salon day package will usually include a wrap, a facial and a massage with free health drinks like fruit juice.

A “Bridal Group Booking” is intended for the bride and her entourage of bridesmaids, but it is naturally up to the bride who is invited. A wedding is a very stressful affair and so this spa salon day package is intended to be a stress-reliever. This package may be a gift from the bride to herself and her friends or a present from someone else. It will often include aromatherapy, a facial, a pedicure and a manicure.

A ‘Men’s Mates Spa Package’ is a often a general maintenance programme concentrating on the regions that most men overlook. This will often include a broad-spectrum skin toner concentrating especially on rough and dry spots; a facial; a manicure, a pedicure and a scalp massage with oil.

A ‘Teenagers’ Get Together’ would be comparable to the males’ package but it would concentrate more on the face and back, especially if the teenagers are suffering from pimples or acne. A teenagers’ spa salon day package is a useful way of introducing teenagers of both sexes to the ways of taking care of their body.

Besides these spa salon day packages, there might also be sampler packages so that you get a trimmed down version of several treatments. This is fantastic for the first timer, especially teenagers who might be taking care of themselves in ways that their parents maybe did not have the time or money for.

Crock Pot Cooking In The Summer

Comments Off

When the weather outside warms up, the kitchen can be a terrible place to be. There are lots of things you can do however, when it comes to cooking a nice home made meal that does not necessitate traditional stove top or oven cooking.

Learn to utilize some of the less heat-creating equipment in your kitchen, such as the crock pot, in order to truly overcome the summer heat and keep your cool while cooking a nice hot meal for friends and family.

So, how does crock pot cooking really help overcome the heat? Simply put, the crock pot in and of itself gives off far less heat when cooking than an oven or stove top. This is the first and possibly the best reason to make the most of the crock pot in your summer meal planning.

You should also take into account the fact that by not heating the house by using your stove top or oven you are also reducing the load on your air conditioning (or other cooling methods) so you are not requiring it to work overtime in order to make up for the additional heat that other cooking methods introduce.

This makes crock pot cooking a win-win situation as the costs involved in operating a crock pot are far less than the expenditure involved in operating a stove or oven. Whether electric or gas, your stove and oven are serious energy users. Add to that the fact that you are not increasing the temperature in your home by traditional means of cooking and you are using even less electricity.

Regrettably, the general consensus has been that crock pots are intended for comfort foods and hearty winter meals. The truth is that the crock pot should be one of your best loved and most often utilized cooking techniques. When it comes to cooking with a crock pot, the options are almost boundless. Almost anything that can be baked can be cooked in the crock pot and many, many more wonderful and enticing meals and treats as well.

Benefits of Crock Pot Cooking

In addition to the cost advantages written above, when it comes to crock pot cooking there are many other advantages that are worth mentioning. First of all, the bulk of the work involved in crock pot cooking takes place early in the day when you are fresh rather than at the end of a hectic work or play day.

This means that you are less likely to forget an ingredient or make some other slip-up, which can undoubtedly happen when trying to cook after a hectic day.

Second, many great crock pot recipes include the vegetables that ensure that we get the vitamins we need. So often, when preparing a meal at the last minute, vegetables and other side dishes are left out for the sake of speed. Crock pot cooking, on the other hand, is a meal in one dish.

Another good reason to use a crock pot for your summertime cooking is the simplicity of washing up. Unlike conventional cooking with several pots and pans, most crock pot meals are completed in one pot. This clearly reduces the hardware needed to be washed up or loaded into the dishwasher (or if you are the same as me – both) afterwards.

So, you spend less time cleaning up, just as you spent less time slaving over a hot stove. Well, make that no time slaving over a hot stove and once the washing up is done, you can get back to enjoying the sun set, mucking about with with the dog or kids, or just waiting for the first stars.

While there will never be a method of cooking that suits everyone, crock pot cooking comes pretty close. So, if you have a crock pot collecting dust somewhere in the back of your cupboard it is time to get it out, dust if off, and dig up some great summertime crock pot cooking recipes.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with the 2 quart crock pot. If you have an interest in cooking or crock pots, please go over to our website now at Large Crock Pots

Are Garden Furniture Covers Worth Having?

Comments Off

Once you have your garden furniture, the next question is how to look after it. You might think that garden furniture is made to be left in the garden, but this is not necessarily true. The real answer is: it depends on what it is made of, where you live and how much effort you are prepared to put into looking after it.

How can you expect any material other than stone or steel to put up with temperature variance from 20c below to 30c above? In some places in the world, the temperature can vary even more. On top of this wood or fabric will soak up some water and so will expand and contract. Hardwood less so, but it does lose natural oils which must be replaced. Plastic perishes in strong sunlight and becomes brittle after a while. Another consideration is theft. Expensive garden furniture is sometimes stolen.

If you have light weight garden furniture and if you have a garden shed, then it would be a good plan to store it in there during the winter or during other times when you think you will not use it much. This will protect it from the worst of the weather. On the other hand, if you have heavy hardwood garden furniture this proposal becomes less realistic.

Steel garden furniture needs to be shielded from rain and snow every now and again with some kind of water repellent polish or even light oil. Wood and wicker need protection too, particularly from rain. This can be accomplished by oiling it correctly and polishing it. Plastic can be stacked in the shade, thus exposing less surface area to the sun when not in use.

The alternative to recurrent maintenance is garden chair covers. You will still have to maintain timber garden furniture, but garden furniture covers shield your furniture from the worst ravages of the weather. Garden furniture covers are normally made from heavy gauge vinyl with a polyurethane lining. The heavier the gauge the vinyl, the more durable the cover. The vinyl exterior of the garden furniture cover protects your furniture from strong direct sunlight, the rain and the snow.

The polyurethane lining will keep out any amount of rain and bad weather, but may become brittle after a few years because of strong direct sunlight. It is worth inquiring about this when you are purchasing your garden furniture covers, because some plastics are much better than others. It has to be highly UV resistant. That is resistant to ultraviolet light. Your garden furniture covers will have to be loose fitting and not impede air flow too much. This is to protect timber furniture against sweating and condensation which could lead to mold, mildew or even rot.

Check that your garden furniture covers have some way of holding themselves down if the wind blows up. Some have an elasticated edge others have ribbons or ties. Be sure that the elastic is strong or that the ties will not rot quickly, because without these aids, you may either lose your garden furniture covers next autumn or you will be reduced to heaping stones on your covers to keep them down, which does not look nice.

Cushions can be kept on the furniture, but under the covers or taken indoors, although some covers have pockets to place the cushions in. Check to see whether these pockets will hold water too which could cause mold and mildew problems for your cushions, depending what they are manufactured from. The last thing to think about is colour. Garden furniture covers come in a range of colours.

This is a personal choice obviously, but as you will be using your garden furniture covers most often in the winter, you may want white to match the snow or you may want to match the colour of your house’s outside walls. Or green to match the surrounding grass. You are on your own there, I am afraid.
